Sarah Grados – The Women of New York & Peru
MY ARTIST STATEMENT
For my Senior Project, I embarked on an exploration of womanhood. I decided the best way to capture womanhood would be through a combination of mediums: the lens of my camera, the power of conversation/connection, and my privilege to travel. I was inspired by Humans of New York as I approached the women of New York to ask them what womanhood meant to them. I then travelled to Peru in search of a different perspective. I chose Peru because even though I am born and raised in New York, I am half Peruvian. While in Peru, I volunteered with an organization called the Sacred Valley Project, that houses young girls and provides education that they would not have access to otherwise. Throughout all these interviews, I found a resounding note that all these different women shared, and it was that of being a nurturer of life and warrior of equality. The camera I used was a Canon DSLR EOS Rebel. For my final gallery, you can find 10 portraits from my New York collection and 10 from my Peru collection with the names, ages and quotes included.
