Itinerary

Monday, April 25th

  • 1:00 – 2:30 pm – Arrive at the airport, pick up rental cars and drive to the hotel
  • 2:30 – 3:15 pm – Snack and unpack
  • 3:30 – 7:00 pm – Sight seeing and dinner in Fort Myers
  • 7:30 – 9:00 pm – Watch “Food Chains” documentary at the hotel

Tuesday, April 26th

  • 8:00 – 9:15 am – Wake up, eat breakfast, depart for Immokalee
  • 10:00 – 1:30 pm – Visit the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) for a worker presentation, walking tour, debrief session, and lunch with members and staff.
  • 2:00 to 4:30 pm – Volunteer with Guadalupe Social Services in Immokalee
  • 5:00 to 7:00 pm – Downtime at the hotel
  • 7:00 to 8:00 pm – Dinner

Wednesday, April 27th

  • 8:30 – 10:00 am Wake up, eat breakfast, depart for U Pick Citrus
  • 10:30 -11:45 am Speak with the owners of U Pick Citrus, one of 2 family run groves in the state, and then pick oranges
  • 12:00 – 12:45 pm Lunch in Estero
  • 1:30 – 2:30 pm – Speak to Professor Roka at University of Florida Agriculture Program in Immokalee
  • 2:45 – 5:30 pm – Sight seeing in Immokalee
  • 5:30 – 6:30 pm – Dinner in Immokalee
  • 7:00 – 9:00 pm – Observe worker member meeting at CIW offices

Thursday, April 28th

  • 4:00 – 5:00 am – Wake up and head to Immokalee
  • 5:30 – 6:30 am – Watch as the busses pick up workers for the fields and eat breakfast tacos
  • 6:30 – 9:00 am – Head back to the hotel to rest
  • 9:30 – 10:45 am – Tour Lipman Farms, a large commercial farm, and visit farm worker housing
  • 11:00 – 11:30 am Lunch
  • 12:00 – 3:00 pm – Volunteer at the Friendship House in Immokalee
  • 3:30 – 6:00 pm – Free time at hotel
  • 6:00 – 7:30 pm – Dinner and debrief trip

Friday, April 29th

  • 7:30 – 9:00 am – Wake up, pack and eat breakfast at the hotel
  • 9:00 am – Leave for the airport; flight time: 11:58 am
    2:54 pm: Land @ JFK; students not picked up by parents will return to LREI with teachers for dismissal
